How did you become popular on Instagram?
Actually, within literally the last 12 months, my Instagram has really seen a rapid uplift in followers. It’s crazy how this time last year I was on just over 500 followers, and now.. almost 65K! I don’t know for certain how it happened, but I think a lot of it was due to the nature of my photos. I work hard on my physical appearance so like many others guys on Instagram, I’m not too shy in showing what I’ve got (within reason). I’m just a normal guy. I have no famous connections, I just post as and when I like. I find that people like my photos and tend to re-post them on feature profiles, which I guess gives me a lot of exposure. For example, the photo with me and Whitney (the french bulldog) was re-posted by a profile with a super huge following base. Not only did it expose my profile to a significant number of people, but it also introduced my profile to a different demographic – dog lovers! I think ultimately my popularity spirals from having a loyal gay following base. And I love them. I love them all. I would say that even up until today, the appreciation my profile gets from the gay community worldwide, is ultimately what helps my profile maintain it’s followers. And I really really do appreciate that.
How does your typical day look like?
A typical day for me would be… Wake up, have breakfast, and then jump out on to my balcony with a coffee, a cigarette and my phone – the first thing I do on my phone is check out my instagram! Yeah, I’m kind of addicted! So I’ll work 9-5 and then head to the gym afterwards! (Gotta keep in shape for the up and coming Insta-posts ha!). After gym, go home, eat and depending on the day, either socialise with friends or have a quiet night in with my flatmates. But I will be honest.. there’s probably not a day that goes past where I think.. hmm should I post that?! And a lot of the time.. I don’t. But then one randomTuesday comes along, you take a selfie and you think… Yup! That’s the money shot! But yeah, unfortunately a typical day for me isn’t cruising on a yacht or by the beach every day or touring the world…although I wish I could…
How many times did you hear, “Oh, I saw you on Instagram”
Hmmm.. a few times.. not a lot a lot, but I remember I was in Barcelona last year and I was approached by a guy who said “Oh My God, you’re here! You’re Deen from Instagram!”. Which was nice! Crazy, but nice. To be in a different country and to be recognized, it’s kinda cool. And a few people in Soho that have recognized me. But what I must say about a lot of my followers, is that they really are loyal…and protective too! I get a lot of DMs from people around the world telling me that someone has made fake profiles pretending to be me on Instagram, Facebook and dating apps! They tell me they’ve reported them and I think aw.. that’s really sweet for people to do that. After all they don’t owe me anything. Quite often, I tag my location on Instagram, so people are aware of which country I’m in… I don’t want anyone thinking I’m sunbathing on a beach in Malaga, when really I’m at work wishing I was on a beach in Malaga!
What does it mean to you to be popular on Instagram?
Ok, first of all… I’d like to thank… No I’m joking! Ha! Well, I mean it’s nice to know that people appreciate what I contribute to Instagram. It’s great to know that people have an interest in what I post. I am conscious that there are a lot of guys out there that are a lot hotter than I am, or have much better bodies than I have, so I all I can do is appreciate the love and the loyalty I get from the people following me. I would like to see my profile continue to grow, and I hope people don’t get bored of my face just yet! So… let’s see what happens! Most people would like to be popular on Instagram, or else most people wouldn’t post. So yeah, it’s a nice feeling to know that people like your posts and follow you to see what you post next.
When you were a little boy, what did you dream about?
I dreamt about being on Eastenders… and possibly being the next member of Destiny’s Child. I figured I had a chance since the group member turnover rate was pretty high! But now Destiny’s Child are no more and I can no longer sing since my voice broke when I was 13. Otherwise, I dreamt of moving out of my hometown Gloucester, living and working in London, which is what I am doing now so, happy days! Oh and I dreamt that I’d be rich… who knows… I still have time! Some dreams do come true! I’ll keep everything crossed! 🙂
